When you have entered the required information to register along with the team name and password, you will be assigned a Workspace. Each team may have only one team name, password and Workspace. There must be one team member and email address registered with that team to receive communication for the team. The team may proceed to your assigned Workspace and develop your Nucor Strength of Steel materials and potential submission. (NOTE: EACH TEAM MEMBER WILL BE REQUIRED TO SUBMIT A COMPLETED PARENT/GUARDIAN PERMISSION FORM TO ENTER THE NUCOR STRENGTH OF STEEL CHALLENGE.) At any time you are in your Workspace you will be able to access the parental/legal guardian permission form online by clicking on the appropriate link. Each member of the team must have a parent/guardian permission form completed and attached to the online entry before the team may submit that entry to the competition. When your team has completed your entry online, if you have already requested and received parental/legal guardian permission for each member of the team, attach those forms to the team entry according to the instructions on the Web site and click on the “Submit” button and your entry will be submitted. If you have not yet requested and received parental/guardian permission you will need to click on the link to the permission form and fill out the form online or download and fill out the form for each member of the team. When permission has been received, you will be able to click the “submit” button to enter your team’s entry. AN ENTRY CANNOT BE SUBMITTED WITHOUT PARENT/LEGAL GUARDIAN’S PERMISSION FOR EACH MEMBER OF THE TEAM.
b. To participate in Nucor Strength of Steel Challenge by mail, obtain an Official Entry Form online at www.strengthofsteelchallenge.com or from participating schools and classroom teachers. Complete the entry form and team permission form with all information requested, and mail it to: Nucor Strength of Steel Challenge, c/o By Kids for Kids Co., 1177 High Ridge Rd, Stamford, CT 06905. Each member of the team must have a parent/guardian permission completed and attached to the entry before the team may submit that entry to the competition. AN ENTRY CANNOT BE SUBMITTED WITHOUT PARENT/LEGAL GUARDIAN’S PERMISSION FOR EACH MEMBER OF THE TEAM.
2. THE ENTRY: Complete the Official Entry Form either online or by mail, including a description of the team’s new, original steel support invention. Your team must construct a prototype of your steel support structure. The entry must include a photo of your team’s prototype; physical prototypes should not be submitted with your entry and will not be accepted. The entry may also include up to 2 additional sketches or other visuals to support your entry (sketch or visual may be on a separate sheet of paper). All entries must be in English. Online entrants can upload a file of their photo and supporting sketch or visual when submitting their entry. The file must be in .jpg or .gif format. Each page of your entry that is submitted must be legible and the back of each page must include your team name, and complete contact information, including one email address, daytime phone number, ages of all members of the team, and the name of your invention. Entries that are not submitted online must be: 1) typed (10 pt. font or larger) or neatly hand printed and 2) double-spaced. The team members listed on the entry form (no less than 2 and no more than 4) will be the only persons eligible to receive a prize(s). The support structures must hold a minimum of 5 pounds. If your team’s entry is selected as a finalist your prototype must be able to be transported to the finalist event. While you can change, alter or modify your invention before it is submitted (either while it is in your Workspace or otherwise), once an entry is submitted, whether online or by mail, it cannot be changed, altered or modified for any reason or in any way whatsoever. Once an entry is submitted either online or by mail, it is your sole responsibility to maintain your team’s contact information and that of your parent/legal guardian to be sure it is current. By having and using a Workspace, however, you are under no obligation to submit material into or enter the Nucor Strength of Steel Challenge. Until such submission, a) Sponsor will have no access to your Workspace or the work in your Workspace, b) you will NOT have entered the Nucor Strength of Steel Challenge, and c) you can remove your work at any time prior to submission. When you access the Web site(s) to work in your Workspace or to participate in the Nucor Strength of Steel Challenge, you must log in using your team name and password. If at any time you forget your team name or password, you may gain access to your team name and password by clicking on the “Forgot Your Username/Password” link on the Web site. Follow the on-screen instructions and your team name or password will be shown to you on the screen. You are solely responsible for the security of your team name and password. You should take precautions to keep your team name and password private and available only to team members to prevent unauthorized use. Neither Sponsor, Administrator, nor any other person or entity will be responsible for any losses, damages or consequences you may suffer due to careless or unauthorized use of a team name and password. If you submit more than one invention online, all of your online inventions will be accessed using the same Workspace. When you access your Workspace, follow the directions to access the particular invention on which you wish to work. It is your sole responsibility to ensure that the invention materials you store and work on, for each of your invention(s), are stored and worked on properly.
4. JUDGING: Entry-Level Judging: All eligible entries will be preliminarily judged to determine the top 16 submissions, by By Kids for Kids™, an independent judging agency whose decisions are final on all matters relating to this judging level of the Challenge, provided there are sufficient eligible entries. The top 16 entries will be determined based on the following Judging Criteria: (i) aesthetics, creativity and uniqueness (40%); (ii) weight-bearing capacity of the structure (25%); (iii) percentage of recycled steel used (25%); and (iv) functionality of structure (10%). The top 16 selected entries will be re-judged by Sponsor, to determine 8 finalist teams, on or about May 20, 2011, based on the 8 highest cumulative scores for the Judging Criteria. IN ORDER TO BE A FINALIST TEAM, EACH MEMBER OF THE SELECTED TEAM (AND EACH TEAM MEMBER’S PARENT/LEGAL GUARDIAN) MUST SIGN AN AFFIDAVIT OF ELIGIBILITY AND RELEASE. FAILURE TO SIGN THIS DOCUMENT SHALL RESULT IN THE SELECTION OF A DIFFERENT FINALIST TEAM. Finalist Judging: The eight finalist teams will be asked to present their invention in person, for a minimum of 5 minutes and a maximum of 15 minutes, at the Grand Prize event in June, 2011, in Charlotte, NC. Each finalist team member must be accompanied by one (1) parent/legal guardian (who will be allowed to attend, but not participate in) the finalist presentations. Finalist teams will need to adhere to the Sponsor-specified presentation guidelines (provided prior to or at the event). Finalist teams will then be judged again by a panel of judges on Judging Criteria (as defined above), whose decisions are final on all matters relating to this Challenge. Each judge will award 5 points to his/her first place selection, 3 points to his/her second place selection and 1 point to his/her third place selection. The finalist team with the highest cumulative score will be the 1 Grand Prize Winning Team. Each member of the finalist team must be present at the Grand Prize event in order to be eligible to win the Grand Prize. In the event of a tie in the Grand Prize round of judging, Sponsor will make the final determination of the Grand Prize Winning Team.
